Kove's photo session at Centennial Park

13 May, 2024

I just love photographing Australian Shepherds, you just can't take a bad photo of them. They are such happy dogs with a strong work ethic and stunning good looks. And Kove was no exception to this.

We had out photo session right at the start of the year at one of my favourite inner city locations, Centennial Park. The park is always perfectly manicured with at least a few flowers blooming from the various gardens scattered around. I always begin my sessions in between the rows of trees right next to the Fly Casting Pond. It's a favourite spot for all types of photographers, and more often than not you can find either wedding or family photos being taken under the large shady trees. I like to begin my sessions here while the sun is still high in the sky, as it can get quite dark under the shade, plus it gives the sun time to set lower and not be as harsh in other spots of the park. Because Kove was so well trained, I was able to get a lot of variety in this spot quickly, including some posed, action and images with him and his pet parent Shaylee.

Our next stop was The Column Garden which was in full bloom. There were so many stunning colours spilling out from the shrubs, I took full advantage of this and positions Shaylee and Kove on a park bench while I photographed them with flowers in the foreground and background.

We then moved to the next garden over, The Rose Garden, but it was mid bloom and recently sprayed for pests. Although not harmful to dogs, we both didn't want to take any risks and returned to The Column Garden for more posed shots before getting Kove's ball out for some fetch photos. The reason I leave the majority of action and fetch photos until the end is that some does become ball obsessed which results them in losing focus plus they can get very slobbery and pant excessively. Kove was so well trained that focus was not an issue, but the slobber was! He enjoyed these photos the most, and happily played fetch in front of my camera for a good while.

Shaylee opted for my ten digital file package, but found it so hard to pick just these ten.
